
Following the upgrades along the Liangma River, nighttime foot traffic on holidays has increased by 120%, with local residents accounting for over 70% of visitors, and the river cruise program attracting 420,000 visitors annually. The project has generated a 1:2.4 multiplier effect on consumer spending, with bars and restaurants along the river seeing an average 62% increase in nighttime revenue, fully revitalizing the city’s inland waterway economy. The river’s public nighttime spaces served 1.6 million residents throughout the year, transforming what was once primarily an inland waterway for navigation and drainage into a high-quality urban living and recreational environment.
Following the modernization of the Tongzhou section of the Grand Canal, nighttime visitor numbers rose by 145%. During the summer holidays, 33,000 visitors were recorded on excursion boats, nearly doubling the figure from the previous year, with up to 19,000 visitors counted on a single holiday day. The average visitor stay duration increased from 2 hours to 4.2 hours, while the share of overnight guests in the secondary urban centre rose by 12 percentage points.
The project generated a consumption leverage effect of 1:2.7: nighttime revenue for restaurants, creative businesses and leisure outlets in the waterside district on the canal’s west bank increased by an average of 68%, creating more than 240 new jobs in the cultural and tourism sector.
The free nighttime viewing areas along the bank received 1.76 million visitors over the year. Supporting special public events helped open the northern starting point of the Grand Canal – a World Cultural Heritage site – to the general public.
Following the upgrades along the Oujiang River, nighttime visitor numbers have increased by approximately 180 percent, with a peak of over 28,000 visitors on a single night during holidays. The sightseeing cruise sector welcomes more than 650,000 visitors annually. The project has generated a 1:2.8 multiplier effect on consumer spending, with average nighttime revenue for riverside dining and leisure businesses increasing by 85 percent, and creating more than 320 new jobs in the cultural tourism, dining, and transportation sectors. The free riverside public space featuring nighttime illuminations has served more than 2.1 million local residents throughout the year, becoming a “city living room” for residents’ daily leisure activities.
Following the project’s implementation, nighttime foot traffic in the area increased significantly. The average length of stay for visitors rose from 2.5 hours to 4.5 hours, the proportion of overnight visitors to the scenic area increased by 17 percentage points, and the nighttime tourism segment welcomed 510,000 nighttime visitors annually. The project generated a 1:3.1 multiplier effect on consumption, stimulating nighttime spending on dining, lodging, and cultural and creative products in the Wuchang area, with average nighttime revenue for nearby businesses rising by 78 percent. The project offers special night tour sessions for local residents, providing cultural experiences to 900,000 residents annually, revitalizing historical and cultural IP, and enriching the city’s public cultural offerings.
